I waited, feeling the ticking of my watch beat its tiny pulse against my wrist. I was leaning against one of the trees at the crest of the hill. He was late - again. I still wait for the day he will ever be on time. But that's just Will: always late. That was why I said to him to meet me at half twelve; I knew he'd actually get there at one, which, incidentally, was the crucial time of our meeting.
"I wondered when you were gonna turn up," I said as I spotted the hunched, lanky figure trudging through the grass.
"Well, what d'ya expect?" Will said, groggy with sleep. "It half bloody twelve."
"Well, technically, it's one o'clock."
"Whatever, man, just tell me why we're here in the middle of the bloody night."
I take my weight off the tree and cross my arms. "Tonight is the night when the most spectacular event ever is going to happen."
"So?" Will yawned. "I thought that was my dream I was havin' before you called and woke me up."
I sighed. Typical Will. "You just need to see it to appre
The Diary of Leonard Williamson
At last! I can see the coastline of France in the distance. Finally this two hour journey will be over. I am sailing to Boulogne, along with my fellow soldiers in the Royal Lancaster regiment, and I doubt anyone could be more excited than I. Who'd have believed it me, Corporal Leonard Williamson, number 15929, off to fight for my king and country!
I can't wait to get off this sickeningly swaying ship, let alone begin training. At least things won't be as bad as this from now on. I had to endure the stench of someone's freshly regurgitated lunch on my face, and I will not be prepared for another experience like that any time soon.
I have been told that we are going to be transported though in what form of transportation I cannot say to the town of Etaples, where the base camps are waiting for us. That is where the training will take place. I'm not sure just yet how big these camps are, but I have been told that they are big enough to house us all. All one hundred th
Ode to the Night
The sun has gone, the time has come,
The time of the palest blue,
When the sounds of day-creatures cease again,
And when it's the owl's and fox's cue.
When the flowers shrink and the trees grow still,
Some die to make way for new,
The invisible clouds of perfumed scents,
The sweet fragrance of ev'ning dew.
A deep breath in, shut my eyes,
And let the luxurious smells
Seep in through my nose and invade
Where contentment dwells.
And now, as the clouds glow navy-blue,
And the stars creep out to play,
And the noises and manic rushing
Of each and every day
Wash away with the sun,
And now for the best part,
The point when the moon's painted light
Makes the world a work of art.
Squeezing my eyes tight shut,
Concentration, so much to hear,
So much to taste, so much to feel,
So much to love, and fear.
And now for the wond'rous sights,
The beauty overwhelming.
A shooting star! Quick, a wish!
Could I be dreaming?
No. I wish ... that,
Until the end of time,
This beauty would never end,
